I'm actually a maintenance manager at a retirement village in Australia. The village here has 214 self care units, 3 aged care hostels and 1 nursing home. I'm just thinking that it might be going a bit far to assume that all children are irresponsible if they don't look after their aged parents - not sure that that is what you are saying. Maybe it isn't. In my experience at the village there is a wide range of people with their parents in the village. Generally, the older folk choose to move into the self care village and then move on to further care as they feel the need for it (along with their doctor's input). Some of the folk are pushed into it I have to admit and it appears that the families are after their parents assets or money - or as you say, just couldn't be bothered with them anymore. However, the majority seek to find a place for their parents that provides quality care for their parents, which they are unable to provide. This is especially the case here in Australia as the government enforces very strict quality care standards on all facilities. Most of the people in our village enjoy a greater level of care, quality of life and more enjoyable life then they were having before they moved in. I have no idea as to what the aged care places you are speaking of are like - perhaps they don't have the same high levels of care that our places have. I'd certainly be interested in knowing more about them. posted by: ammegan (reply) post date: 07.18.07 (4:14 am) Reply to: bushman Hi Bushman, I appreciate your comment. I can see the advantage of sending parents to nursing homes and I don't doubt that they have excellent services. However, It isn't always the case in Asian countries. People frown upon the idea of sending parents to Nursing homes due to cultural & society beliefs plus most of the nursing homes we have here don't meet the normal standard. One of the nursing homes I visited was filthy and unwelcoming. So, with this image of a nursing home we have here, I don't think it's a good idea for children to send their parents to nursing homes. More over, the average old folks who live in nursing homes here mostly have well-to-do sons/daughters. Either they help in improving the condition of the nursing homes, or pay someone to take care of their parents and spend some bucks on buying them good facilities and health care stuff. I visited your blog. YOu have interesting infos there. Keep it up! :) |
