Should Teachers Give Homework?
10.24.07 (11:09 pm)   [edit]
"HOMEWORK OR NO HOMEWORK??

Okay, this question applies to primary and elementary level (Grade 1-3). I need some general opinion on whether it is necessary for children at this level to go home with homework/reading assignments/etc or is it a sin not appropriate for teachers to give homework at this age level? What do you think? Wait, when I say "no homework" it means no homework at all.

The reason I am asking is because recently there was a hot debate in our school about the above matter. Some strongly believed that students should not be brooding on their school work once they go home and should be spending more time with their families whereas on the other side of the coin, some believed that students should at least review what they have done in school, thus homework reinforces students to study and review.

Now note this, our parents don't share most of our opinions. Most (60%) parents that sends their kids to our school are working parents or to relate them in this context, I would bluntly say that they don't have or don't spend time with their kids. So through our survey, we noticed that 99% parents went for "Yes, homework!" and only 1% says "No, what for!" So to sum it up, some (fortunately not all) parents prefer seeing their kids get busy after school doing homework rather than they (parents) having to entertain their kids. Well, homework serves a point too -- so that our students don't develop a potato couch habit! So far, no research has proven that homework encourages academic success. What do you say??

As someone that raised five kids... stayed home for most of it, worked for part of it. Some had homework, some did not I stand for a mixed review.
1. Parents SHOULD read with their children.. it was some of the very best times I spent with the children.

2. I'm not exactly against homework IF we as parents only have to help minimally. My reasoning is not because of laziness... but when a child brings homework home and it's graded, we as parents understandably want them to do their best so we help them. Then the only thing the teacher knows is if WE parents know how to do the homework. So, in short.. yes for homework but NOT graded. Use it not just as practice but so the teacher can see what needs gone over the next day before moving on to the next lesson. In fact.. this is what a teacher told me once. She'd rather see what my son does without my help.

3. Minimize that homework! By the time I got to my grandaughter .. in first grade, we were reading a minimum of thirty minutes.. required. Then, there were three, sometimes four homework assignments. As you can well imagine homework could take up to two hours. She got home at four, homework for an hour, dinner, homework, bath, read.. bed. She literally had no time for something equally as important.. Outside play!! At that time I was ready to agree with the parents that say.. No homework. Especially since they don't have physical education in school anymore.. or only have it one day a week.. they need physical activity too.
Just my two cents worth..

Reply to angelsdreams: Hi Angelsdreams, your two cents worth means a lot to me. Thank you for sharing. In fact, most dedicated parents I spoke to share some of your points here. Hats off to those of you who spend time READING with their kids. It helps tons both in improving their performance in school and bonds parents-children together. About graded homework, one parent called me and poured out her concern about her son's Chinese writing skills. I told her that the purpose of me giving his son homework is to practice and improve as we go. So yes, homework should not be given for the purpose of grading rather given so that teachers could better assess their students and the effectiveness of their teaching. Well, just like you said Angelsdreams, this is just my two cents worth. Nevertheless I really appreciate your (as a parent)point of view. I hope to hear from you again.

I think that going for less homework but a frequent amount of class tests is better ... students really know what they are doing and they can't get the help of parents as they do class tests alone.

Maybe students will not like too many tests, so you could try giving group tests (where two or three students help each other in a test), row quizzes (splitting the class in different rows and awarding a point for every correct answer to the respective row) or open-book tests.

Thanks for your input sjmclean. I agree that quizzes and tests helps in giving us feedback as to where our students stand. Personally, I like giving quizzes before I start my classes as to see whether students could remember what they have previously learned. If they forget, then it's time to go through those things again. ;)

No, because the person doing the homework is or is directed by a parent! Children need outdoor activity and interchange in social situations. Backpacks are ruining their backs, further.

I Don't think teachers should give homework because the teachers could teach the homework in class and would'nt have to give homework. It does'nt give you any time to play with your friends and family. And kids should'nt have to do it every day.
And if you don't finish it your parents would get sometimes very mad.And those my reasons why teachers should'nt have to give homework.
